You know, it is from my Soviet legacy: I collect, collect, collect. Some of it is crap, some can be useful for someone. I decided to put it all online.

    Here a chunk of today:

Ain’t Wordpress Naming wonderful? Just delete the names from the link… Here we go. Fresh from TechCrunch. A list of Google partners: Acer, Adobe, Asus, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments. At last TI have something good going after Macs departure to Intel (thank you, Steve for that — it gave us Hackintosh!). But this move is argued to be controversial because it is directed against my beloved Dell, and Intel. Hmmm… But it would be stupid to be restrictive and it makes little sense. I believe the OS will be free thus those who want it may try.

That’s interesting: there will be a Google OS in 2010. It will be based on open source Linux and will utilize the power of web apps. It will work on ARM and x86 processors. It is designed (as seen by processors) mostly for netbooks (and smartphones, I assume). It is based on good premises.

It seems like the new OS will be designed to speed up access to email and Internet without lengthy boot times for the computer and sites. The OS will also have majority of data residing on a computer-independent (Web) media. The OS should also have computer configuration, software updates, and device recognition simplified so that people spent more time on the web.

Yeah, and it will be called Google Chrome. From a Russian Google blog.

Always wondered how many people watch porn on the net (and mobile devices). Here’s some stats from the latest Yahoo Tech article.

“More than a third of Internet users surf to salacious sites on a semiregular basis, according to some purely academic research cited in a recent Harvard study (PDF). Most of those users hit nearly eight X-rated sites each month — and, even with a typical visit lasting only 11.6 minutes (insert inappropriate joke here)”

As to mobile phones, Japan, as the most advanced country in the mobile tech respect (I am not sure about porn advanced, let’s assume average) -

“Japan’s top porn providers say mobile-based sales are “driving [their] revenue growth.” If that’s not enough, a telecommunications research group tells Bloomberg mobile-based porn revenue is exploding, with projections showing cash flow from cell phone smut more than doubling over the next five years.”

Need a new idea for content?

BTW, are you people sick of all those users who add you on Twitter and then… “Visit me, I am naked”?

An interesting article in NYT about Russia’s and the US approaches to cyber war. Russia favors a kind of “cyberarms” control laws whereas the US favors tighter law enforcement cooperation. As the article concludes, the approaches may not be that different at the end.

China has also been mentioned. From what I heard, Chinese are building their own OS which will be different from the existing ones and which is very covert. Therefore, it may be them who test it on the US, when the article mentions that many of the attack sources cannot be identified.

It’s obious that the wars have been fought already against Estonia and Georgia by alleged Russian extremists as well as by Chinese after the collision of a US spy plane with a Chinese jet fighter.

I didn’t investigate but have heard that during Serbia and Iraq wars, computers and communication networks stopped working. That’s what Russia should be afraid of and it is, as indicated by the proposals to ban insertion of malicious code in OSes as apparently is the case.

More generally, here is a quote summarizing some cyber-weapons:

“logic bombs” that can be hidden in computers to halt them at crucial times or damage circuitry; “botnets” that can disable or spy on Web sites and networks; or microwave radiation devices that can burn out computer circuits miles away.

Although the US obviously leads the way in cyber development (just open the first page of any Business section of a US newspaper and see what companies are mentioned – mostly IT), Russia has attracted some attantion to its code development force and mathematicians. On the other hand, as Mr. Gladwell says, Chinese have an inherent advantage of learning to count earlier than either of the two countries.

Just finished a cool article at BBC in Russian - about Jackson’s influence on the Internet. Here’s a true measure of popularity:

    - Google refused searches with “Jackson” because the system thought its a massive hacker attack.

    - CNN, CBS, Yahoo had speed issues.

    - Wikipedia had overload with users editing one articvle.

All in all, we are kinda vulnerable…
