It has been a lot of talking lately of LBS or Location Based Services.
To wit, as Andrew from London Calling is quoting CEO of Google Eric Schmidt, who said:
“The arrival of a truly mobile Web, offering a new generation of location-based advertising, is set to unleash a “huge revolution. … It’s the recreation of the Internet, it’s the recreation of the PC (personal computer) story and it is before us — and it is very likely it will happen in the next year”.
I also like to compare today’s mobile phone use with that of the first Internet years that indeed were only some 15 years ago.
What we have learned from those times is that there will be something big grown out of it. Well, too simple, but true.
We also understand that we need three things to tap into truly amazing results:
1 – Mobile Internet at high speeds and wider coverage
2 – Powerful devices that can deal with Internet like normal computers
3 – Long-lasting batteries
And with LBS and GPS, we have the full model for Augmented Reality which is featured in the video on the home page of Mobile Heroes.
However, there are services which provide location information without waiting for Google investment in triangulation to pay off or having powerful batteries which will last throughout a day feeding GPS (or GLONASS?).
One of the services is ArrivedOK, developed by Eyeline. The service basically knows where you are at a certain point in time. Thus it can be used not only to track someone and send alerts but also to supply important anti-fraud information to banks.
